Federico Chiesa Opens Up on Liverpool Journey – “I Want to Play Here, I Want to Prove Myself”

After a challenging start at Liverpool, Chiesa reflects on his long-awaited full 90 minutes and reaffirms his commitment to the club.

Federico Chiesa has broken his silence on his tough start at Liverpool, expressing his determination to prove himself after finally completing a full 90 minutes in the Reds’ 3-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven.

The Italian winger, who arrived from Juventus in a £12.5 million deal, made only his second start for the club on Wednesday night—his first since September and just his ninth appearance overall. After enduring months of frustration, often training separately from the main squad to regain fitness, Chiesa’s latest outing marked a significant step forward.

Despite the result, the No. 14 impressed with his relentless energy and attacking threat, winning the penalty that led to Cody Gakpo’s opener and playing a key role in Harvey Elliott’s goal that put Liverpool 2-1 ahead.

Chiesa’s Message: “I Want to Be Here”

In his post-match interview with LFCTV, Chiesa was candid about his struggles but remained optimistic about the future.

“I have to thank the coach and the staff for giving me the opportunity to play the full 90 minutes tonight,” he said.

“For me, it was huge because I needed it—I needed it for everything. Since I joined Liverpool, I’ve wanted to prove myself, but for many reasons, I wasn’t able to.

“Tonight, after such a long time, I finally got 90 minutes under my belt, and I’m really grateful for that.”

Chiesa acknowledged that he still has work to do but is eager to improve and cement his place in the squad.

“There’s always room for improvement, to get better and reach the best version of my game,” he continued.

“We have a fantastic squad, and competition is fierce, but that’s what I want—I want to be here, I want to play for Liverpool, and I want to challenge myself.

“I will be ready for my next opportunity. Again, I want to thank the coach for tonight.”

A Bigger Role in Liverpool’s Push for Trophies?

Chiesa’s performance against PSV has fueled expectations that he will play a more prominent role under Arne Slot moving forward. With Liverpool still competing on four fronts and Diogo Jota sidelined with an injury, opportunities could come sooner rather than later.

His next expected start is in the FA Cup fourth-round clash against Plymouth on February 9, where fans will be eager to see more of his high-energy, direct style of play.

“I’m playing with great players, I’m part of a great team, and we’re focused on every competition,” Chiesa said.

“We want to challenge for the Premier League title, the Champions League, the Carabao Cup, and the FA Cup.

“There’s an amazing atmosphere around the club, and I’m really enjoying myself here.”

Despite speculation linking him with a return to Serie A, Chiesa made it clear that his focus remains on Liverpool.

“I know I didn’t get the chance to play much at first, but tonight was my first full 90 minutes in a while, and that’s all I’m thinking about.

“I love being at this club—Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the fanbase is incredible. Playing at Anfield gives me shivers.”

With renewed confidence and a clear commitment to Liverpool’s cause, Chiesa now looks forward to making a greater impact as the Reds continue their pursuit of silverware.
